Luckie's Tail

Getting Luckie! (by Renée)

It was around the time of my birthday in April of 2004, and all I wanted was a kitten! I had recently moved from a studio apartment, and felt it was time to make that happen. After all, I had plenty of room now for a litter box! Having grown up in a house full of cats, I knew what type of joy & love they could bring to my surroundings. Shortly after deciding to get a cat, a coworker of my roommate was found to have a pregnant cat….perfect timing!

Arriving Mid May of 2004, Luckie KittenLuckie was one of two kittens in her litter. I felt so “lucky” to have her in my life that Luckie was the perfect name. Luckie fit in the palm of my hand when she first arrived, and from certain angles you would swear she was all ears! After a week it became apparent that I should have taken both Luckie & her sister. Cats are like potato chips ~ you can’t just have one! The following week we adopted Lucie as part of our family. It was beautiful to see them together, you could tell they missed each other and from this point on stayed near each at all times.

I used to call Luckie "patheta-kitty" because she begged for my attention so emphatically. She would come to the table when we were sitting at it and stand up on her hind legs, put her paws on my leg and "dance". She would use her paw to pet my leg--sort of like, "Here, let me show you how to do this petting thing". Her eyes implored me to love her. But of our four cats, she was the one I was least fond of. She had been Renée's cat when we met, and Luckie and I never got close. She didn't like to be picked up and held, and she was seemingly incapable of standing still to be petted. She also wasn't good at picking up on emotional cues that other cats seemed to sense easily. If I was grumpy, the other cats knew to steer clear for a while, but not Luckie. It was like she was oblivious to social cues and I often said that she wasn't the brightest bulb in the package.

However, she was Miss Photogenic at our house. She was not, by far, the prettiest cat in the house. Her litter mate, Lucie is a gorgeous cat with plush fur and big round eyes and TK and Yoshi both have more attractive markings than Luckie. But, put a camera in front of her and she posed like she'd been trained to be a kitty model. It was bizarre how well the pictures would come out. All the photos on this site are an indication of how often she was photographed. Luckie has a claim to fame as a "calendar girl". A photo of her was chosen to be in the Humane Society's 1997 Page-a-Day calendar. She also won third place in Pura's Cute Cat Photo Contest April 2005.
